Smyrna

Smyrna, known today as Izmir, is an ancient city believed to have been founded around the 11th century BCE. Its people proudly claimed to be the birthplace of the famous Greek poet Homer.

A Thriving Seaport and Commercial Rival

Smyrna grew into a prosperous and beautiful commercial city thanks to its coastal location. It competed fiercely with Ephesus and Pergamum for influence in the region. The city was also a major center of emperor worship and paganism, and it was home to a significant Jewish community.

Smyrna's Place in the Book of Revelation

Among the seven congregations addressed in the Book of Revelation, Smyrna stands out for its loyalty. Jesus commended the congregation for its endurance under pressure and encouraged it to remain loyal even to death (Revelation 2:8-11).

Smyrna: Where Faith Met Persecution

Although few ancient remains have been excavated in Smyrna, the real focus of this visit lies in the spiritual lessons this city still has to offer. On this tour, we will discuss Jesus' words to the Smyrna congregation and reflect on the pressure the early Christians faced and on Polycarp's faith and loyalty.

Reading these words together on site where this congregation once lived makes the Bible's message come to life. It helps us reflect on the persecution our brothers endured and strengthens us to remain faithful today and in the future.
